Australia is a country of choice for many Indians wishing to migrate. The Indian community is the fastest growing migrant group in Australia, having increased five-fold in the last 20 years. Close to 784,000 Australians have Indian ancestry which equates to 3.1% of the population.
If you’re living in India and wish to make Australia your home, there are many visas which allow you to do this.
Below is a list of available Australian visas.
- Family and Partner Visas
- Visitor Visas
- Studying and Training Visas
- Working and Skilled Visas
- Refugee and Humanitarian Visas
- Other Visas (e.g., Bridging Visas)
Anyone wishing to move to Australia needs to determine their reasons for migrating. Once that has been established, you can choose the visa that is right for you.
The ability of temporary residents in Australia to apply for permanent residence is determined by their current visa as well as meeting eligibility criteria.
The Process
The general process for applying for a visa entails:
- Identifying a suitable visa for your needs (student, working, family, etc)
- Meeting the eligibility requirements
- Preparing relevant documentation
- Completing the visa application
- Lodging and paying the application fee
The visa fee and processing time varies on the type of visa being applied for. The length of stay and visa conditions will depend on the visa granted at the time.
Those seeking to migrate to Australia through the Skilled Migration program will need to have an occupation listed on the relevant skilled occupation list. Those wishing to study in Australia will need to ensure their course is listed on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Information pertaining to the requirements for each visa class and subclass can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website.
While each visa class and subclass have their own specific eligibility criteria that must be met, all visa applications require applicants to:
- Meet health requirements.
- Meet character requirements.
- Meet all visa conditions and obey Australian laws.
Applicants may also be required to undergo biometric testing.
The visa application process can be complex, so it is recommended you engage the services of a registered migration agent. A registered migration agent can help identify a suitable immigration pathway for you and assist with the application process. The Future of the Relationship Between Australia and India
Paving the way for increased migration from India is the new Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA) between Australia and India which was announced in May this year. Effective from 1st July 2023, the MMPA will create more opportunities for young people and early career professionals in both countries.
Options will be available for visa applicants to extend or apply for visas to boost labour mobility for students, graduates, academics, professionals and short-stay arrivals. Also part of the deal is a new pilot program, Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-Professionals Scheme or MATES, which will enable university graduates and early-career professionals in India to come to Australia for up to two years without sponsorship.
