How To Get A 2-Year Visa For Culinary Students
If you are a culinary student or looking to study cookery in Australia, you could be entitled to a student visa which may be valid for two years or more depending on your course.
In order to become a culinary student and study in Australia on a student visa, the course you wish to study must be listed on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Once you are enrolled in a full-time course that’s registered on CRICOS, you may apply for a student visa.
Culinary Student Visa
A student visa is a temporary visa and the length of time granted on the visa is determined by the culinary course duration. When a student visa is granted, it is granted for the duration of the course and depending on what time of the year the culinary course concludes, it will include up to an additional three months for most applications.
The course completion date as well and the student’s overseas health cover (OSHC) validity will determine the length of stay for a student on a study visa. There are many colleges that commence courses on a monthly or quarterly basis and therefore have completion dates that don’t fall in line with the academic year end.
The following table outlines how the length of stay for a student visa is determined.
Length of Course | Length of Stay |
10 months or longer in duration and finishes at the end of the Australian academic year (November / December) | The student visa will be valid until 15th March the following year |
10 months or longer in duration and finishes anytime from January to October | The student visa will be valid for an additional two months after the course is completed |
Less than 10 months | A visa will be granted for one additional month after the course has been completed |
Culinary Student Course
The Certificate III in Commercial Cookery listed on CRICOS has a course duration of 101 weeks. In this case, the 101 weeks that the course runs for is a few weeks short of two years. Given the course runs for longer than 10 months, the student visa will be granted with an additional 2 – 3 months after the course is complete. The additional time granted will depend on the time of year the course is completed. This will make the visa valid for approximately two years.
