Changes to Newly Arrived Resident’s Waiting Period
As announced in the 2021/22 budget, migrants granted a relevant permanent or temporary visa may need to wait up to four years to be eligible for Australian welfare payments.
Families can be complex and while the family stream of Australia’s migration program enables close family members to be reunited in Australia it doesn’t cover all family situations.
To ensure families of all circumstances are covered, there are a range of other family visas available.
Carer visas are available to those who are willing to travel and live in Australia to provide care to a relative with a long-term medical condition who does not have reasonable care options in Australia.
The person requiring care must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. The applicant must be outside of Australia when applying for this visa.
A remaining relative visa is available to those who do not have any close relatives around them other than their relatives living in Australia as Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens.
This visa aims to reconnect the family member with their family in Australia based purely on their family connection and not their level of contact or quality of relationship. To apply for this visa, applicants must be outside of Australia.
The orphan relative visa enables a child who is single to come to Australia to live with a relative if their parents are deceased, can’t care for them or cannot be found. The relative must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. If the child has siblings wishing to apply for this visa, they must submit a separate application.
